One of the scopes of practise of a dietitian is food service management. This semester, we are learning about the “ins and outs” of food service units – specifically, we visited the dining halls of our university to have a peek behind the scenes of how the food in our dining halls are prepared, which systems are in place to ensure optimum food quality and hygiene and how the kitchen is managed. This made me realise how convenient, handy and healthy – yes, healthy – a dining hall can be for the active university student.
Let’s be honest: as a busy student juggling work, training, social life and other responsibilities, cooking healthy meals every day can be quite a challenge. Dining halls at college, school or university offer a convenient solution to the problem – but with so many food options along the rows of hot trays and salad bars, it’s important for to know how to navigate the dining hall and make choices that will support your health and performance goals.
Here are a few tips to help you make healthy choices at the dining halls:
And most importantly: be intentional to make healthy choices! Plan to eat healthy before you even get to the dining hall. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
