When we set health, fitness and nutrition goals it is important, converting those goals to habits are key to success in 2021. Why? Reaching our goals is not done in one, big, dramatic step – it is done by doing the little things every day, consistently, that will help us reach our goals.
Step 1
First, determine what you want to achieve, and WHY. Knowing your WHY will be your guiding light throughout the whole process of pursuing your goals.
Step 2
Then, ask yourself – who do I need to be in order to reach these goals? James Clear, author of the book Atomic habits, often write about identity-based habits. According to him, changing beliefs involves deciding who you want to be, and then proving it to yourself with small wins. A lot of people start out focusing on their outcome. However, a better way to create habits that last is to start with who we wish to become in order to reach the said outcome. That is how we build identity-based habits. For example, if a person identifies with the identity of “not being an active person”, having a fit, healthy lifestyle is not going to align with that identity. Conversely, if a person views herself as being an active person, she is more likely to do the things that an active person does, like go to training.
Step 3
Persevere and stay consistent. Consistent action done imperfectly beats perfect action done sporadically each time.
Step 4
Adapt and adjust when necessary. Review your habits and their impact on your life regularly. If you feel that a specific habit is not pulling you forward in the way that you thought it would, be willing to adapt it. Flexibility is key, and sometimes our game plan will change as we grow, gain perspective and gain more information.
The steps we need to take to reach our goals are often smaller than we think, but it requires us to see ourselves and the world in a way that propels us forward, instead of holding us back.
On our Health Elevation Social media, we are running a challenge called “90 days of ELEVATION” – where, for the first 90 days of 2021 we are focusing on one habit a week for 12 weeks in order to ELEVATE health and performance.
